"It's hypocrisy to call yourself a Christian and chase away a refugee or someone seeking help, someone who is hungry and thirsty, toss out someone who is in need of my help... If I say I am a Christian, but do these things, I'm a hypocrite."
--Facebook meme, attributed to Pope Francis
This is obviously aimed at those benighted countries who are attempting to crack down on uninvited immigrants, and attempting to shame them for lack of Christian charity. In this light, Francis is a hypocrite. Vatican City has the strictest immigration policy in the world. There are no hungry refugees getting through those doors.
Hypocrisy is a given when you use Christ to advance a political agenda. A wild Christian thought: maybe charity should be extended to your political opponents as well as your friends in the grandstand. What would that look like in this case? Like this: instead of the memes, moral abstractions, and pabulum we often heard from Francis on this topic, he should have, in charity, looked closely at the Vatican's own immigration policy and wondered if some of that strict rationale might simply be good government and thus applicable for other countries as well. And if not, maybe it's not good for the Vatican either. In the spirit of diversity, maybe the Vatican should accept a larger Muslim population to match world demographics. Absurd? Absolutely. But in various demographic forms this is what many western nations have been asked, lectured, and pressured to do by their progressive brethren (who mostly are not Christians and only invoke the Pope to browbeat their opponents). Of course many of the citizens of these browbeaten nations have grumbled and then openly resisted by electing conservatives. This has been greeted by their progressive opponents not with the appropriate critical self-reflection, but rather with the scorn, venom, and high-handedness of morally obtuse virtue-signallers who will not lower themselves to engage in debate. That's why there's civil war in the west.
