A sane country does not kill babies for a hobby. This from Yair Golan in reference to Israel's continued war on Gaza. We hear this kind of thing routinely from pro-Hamas activists but from a potential Israeli candidate for prime minister? Do any Israelis see the war on Gaza this way? That it's about "killing babies for a hobby?" It's the sort of venomously hostile straw-man meme you'd expect on "x" or Facebook. No serious person believes it. It's obviously aimed at the Netanyahu administration, which is saddled with bringing the war to its least desirable conclusion. And there are only three justifiable conclusions.
The first: That the Palestinian people overthrow Hamas, return the hostages, and sue for peace. This is the most desirable because it gives the greatest confidence of lasting peace and productive future relationships in the region.
The second: That Hamas unconditionally surrender, return the hostages, and surrender up its remaining leaders to answer for the October 7th massacre. This is less desirable than the first because the Palestinian people elected Hamas and have supported Hamas throughout the entire debacle. It suggests that, though beaten for now, the Palestinians have not abandoned the stated intention of Hamas to destroy Israel and the Jewish people.
The third: That Israel invade and occupy Gaza, while rooting out whatever remains of Hamas leadership, and doing the best they can to manage a hostile population. Unfortunately this is the only justifiable option left to Israel and Netanyahu is pursuing it to the end.
For Israel to stop hostilities against Hamas because chattering western bystanders are aghast at the carnage is not justifiable. It would be like calling a ceasefire at the end of WWII so that care packages could be sent to the civilians in Hitler's bunker. No. Hamas deliberately designed its tunnels and defensive apparatus to center on Palestinian schools and hospitals so that the worst and most tragic civilian casualties would occur at the hands of Israelis. They knew that the western concern for innocents would hobble Israeli forces, and that the inevitable civilian deaths would work against Israel in a western press that's ambivalent if not actively hostile towards it. For Hamas, civilians are conscript cannon fodder. The sooner their reign is finished, the better.
Arguments that Israelis are colonizers and deserve what Hamas dished up in the October 7th massacre are simply beneath contempt. Israel exists and that's all there is to it. At this point in history, to claim that it's not a legitimate nation is to openly or tacitly support the growing anti-semitism that pushes for Israel's extinction.
